Portland Library Scrapbook - February 1891

       Death of E.B. Powell

Died-At his home in this village on Thursday last, of paralysis of the stomach, 
Edward B.Powell, aged 50 years.

mr.Powell came to Portland from Ionia about 35 years ago, and since his 
residence here has been engaged principally as a millwright, but a thorough 
mechanic in all branches. Mr.Powell has not been well for years, and has been 
confined to the house since last Christmas, and for some time past what 
nourishment he received was injected into the stomach.

Deceased leaves a wife, daughter (Mrs.Sumner Hixson) and a son, Carl, whose 
present residents is unknown The funeral services were conducted from the 
Universalist Church on Sunday morning last and were largely attended, Rev. 
W.S.Godell, pastor, officiating.

Some time previous to his death Mr.Powell had expressed a desire to have certain 
gentleman act as pall-bearers at his funeral, and in accordance with that wish 
Mesers. J.E.Newman, D.Kennedy, N.Stevens, Geo.Seymour, Wm. Hixson and Loren 
Jenkins bore him his last resting-place.

The cause of Mr.Powell's death had been a mystery to the physicians attending 
him, consequently on a postmortem was held by the physicians of the place on 
Friday last, when it was found that the passage leading into the stomach was 
closed up, showing that Mr.Powell literally starved to death.

int he sickness of our departed one, and for so many, many other thoughtful
attentions paid us, we wish to extend our heartfelt thanks and in time of like 
trouble may as kind friends be found to assist and lighten your gloom is the
