Ionia Sentinel Standard, 29 Jun 1987

John H. Roberts, 85, of Ionia, died Saturday at the Ionia Manor.  Born in Black
River Falls, Wis., on Dec. 22, 1901, he was the son of Alvin E. and Alma C.
Disch Roberts, and attended schools in Wisconsin.

He worked as a carpenter in Iron Mountain, Grand Rapids and Ionia and was
employed by the Hayes Manufacturing Co., the A.C. Sparkplug Co., and Fisher Body
in Ionia.  For many years he worked in the heating and plumbing field in Ionia.
 He retired in 1969 after serving 13 years as power plant engineer at Michigan
Reformatory.

He was married to Bernice Greenhoe Sept. 13, 1934, in Crown Point, Ind., and had
resided in Ionia since his marriage.  She preceded him in death Jan. 15, 1982. 
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ionia, Ionia County
Historical Society, and Ionia Senior Citizens.

Surviving are two sons, Thomas E. Roberts of Grandville and James A. Roberts of
Ionia; two grandsons; two brothers, Richard of Grand Rapids and Paul of Alaska;
seven sisters, Frances Perry, Margaret Paddock, Linda Holman, Ada McGregor, and
Rosemary Relyea, all of Wisconsin, Bessie Sherwood of Marine City, Mich., and
Joyce Andberg of Virginia.  One sister, Esther Hansen, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the First Presbyterian
Church, with the Rev. Robert Nixon officiating.  Burial will be in Sunset
Memorial Gardens.  A memorial has been established for Ionia County Historical
Society, in care of the Main Street Chapel of Montgomery Funeral Home.  The
family will be at the chapel Monday and Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
