Berton E. Slater, 82, died Saturday morning at his home in Clarksville 
following an illness of several years.  He was born September 2, 1875 in 
Grattan township, Kent county, the son of Peter and Clara (Mulholland) Slater.  
He was married to Clara Whitters on August 19, 1894.  Mrs. Slater preceded her 
husband in death by a week.  She died Saturday, March 8.

Surviving are eight children, Mrs. A. I. (Mabel) McCaul of Lake Odessa, Roy 
Slater of Saranac, Keith Slater and Mrs. Russell (Phoebe) Geiger of Ionia, and 
Carl, Forest, and Richard Slater and Mrs. Edwin (Mary) McCaul of Clarksville; 
23 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Wesleyan Methodist church with 
the Rev. Raymond Carpenter officiating.  John Beattie funeral home in 
Clarksville was in charge of funeral arrangements.  Interment was in 
Clarksville cemetery.
