David D. Smith, 82, of Lake Odessa, passed away Monday, Jan. 24, 2011, at 
Thornapple Manor in Hastings. He was born April 11, 1928, in Hubbardston, the 
son of Harold and Belva (Lockwood) Smith.

David attended schools in Hubbardston, Maple Rapids and Carson City and later 
attended Ferris State College.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II. David was a member and 
past Commander of Jackson-Mutschler VFW Post 4461 in Lake Odessa. He was also a 
member of the American Legion Post 45 in Hastings.

He owned and operated businesses in Cadillac, (Northern Grind) and Lake Odessa, 
Michigan (Lakeside Tooling). He was a journeyman precision tool maker and 
retired from General Motors.

He spent his retirement years in Lake Odessa, where he enjoyed watching the 
wildlife around his lake. He had a special bond with all animals, especially 
his cat, Tom.

David married Barbara Updike on Oct. 10, 1953, in Belding.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Leonard Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara Smith of Lake Odessa; daughters 
Rebecca (Duane) Ruttan of Williamsburg, Michigan and Susan (Thomas) Gould of 
Hudson, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. 

Visitation with the family will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 
2011 at the Koops Funeral Chapel – Lake Odessa. Funeral services for David will 
be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan 28 at Koops Funeral Chapel – Lake Odessa. A 
private interment will be at Woodland Memorial Park.
