Smith, age 77, passed away on Friday, February 15, 2008. He was born on November 14, 1930 on the family homestead in Dany Township, the son of Carl and Alice (Avery) Smith. Robert married Kathleen (Felzke) on November 25, 1950 and they raised three sons during their 57 years of marriage. After Robert graduated from Portland High School in 1949, he worked and retired from Michigan State University after 43 years of service as a roofing supervisor. He also never abandoned his continued devotion and work to the Smith family farm. He enjoyed fishing and took numerous fishing and canoeing trips with friends. Robert and Kathleen enjoyed spending time traveling throughout the U.S.. Robert was a life member of the Masonic Lodge and Portland United Methodist Church. He is lovingly survived by his wife Kathleen; sons Charles (Helen), Mark (Lois), and Steve (Sherlyn) all of Portland; 11 grandchildren, Michelle Smith, Jacqueline (Todd) Huhn, Christina (Jeff) Bower, Cynthia (Jason) Fedewa, Jennifer Smith, Kimberly (Lowell) Larsen, Angela (Jayson) Garvin, Sarah (Luke) Simpson, Jason Smith, Stacy (Steve) Nurenberg, and Kristopher (Alicia) Smith; 7 great grandchildren; Robert will also be missed by his brother, Howard (Bert) Smith; sisters, Lois (Marvin) Gensterblum and JoAnn (Richard) Pline; brother-in-law, Paul (Sandra) Felzke; sisters-in-law Betty (Harold) Klaver and Glenna Soltow; many nieces and nephews and close friends. Funeral Services will be conducted by Pastor Gregory R. Wolfe at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at the Portland United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Danby Cemetery. The family will receive friend 6-8 pm., Sunday and 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Monday at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland.
