The Belding Banner, Thursday, August 15, 1907
James Sutphen, who has been a resident of Belding since 1890, died at his home 
Thursday, August 8, 1907, aged 79 years, 11 months and 8 days.  About nine 
years ago he suffered a sever stroke of paralysis, and for the past year has 
been confined to his bed.

He was born in Lyons, Genesee County, New York, September 1, 1827, and was the 
eldest of seven children, four of whom are now living:  Mrs. Sarah A. Briggs, 
Mrs. Mary J. Pease and Elias Sutphen of St. Louis, Mich., and Mrs. Harriet 
Travedick, of Saginaw, Mich.  

In 1838 he moved with his parents to Macomb county, near Detroit, and was 
married to Miss Sarah Taylor December 30, 1857, who survives him.  To this 
union were born seven children, of whom five are living; Mrs. L. C. LaClair of 
Big Rapids, Mrs. Chas. Campbell of McCords, Mrs. Henry Nichols, Mrs. G. P. 
Kimberly and E. T. Sutphen of this city.  With his wife he moved to 
Whitneyville, Kent County, in 1863 where he operated a sawmill and workshop 
and was also a carpenter and cabinet maker by trade.  He resided in 
Whitneyville for 27 years, until he moved to Belding.

The funeral was held at the late residence Saturday morning at 9 o’clock, Rev. 
J. W. Sheehan officiating, and the interment was made in the family lot at 
Whitneyville.  Relatives from out of town who attended the funeral services 
were Mr. and Mrs. Elias Sutphen and Mrs. Sarah Briggs of St. Louis, Mr. and 
Mrs. L. C. LaClair and son Maurice of Big Rapids, Mrs. Chas. Campbell of 
McCords, William Taylor of Muskegon and Mrs. Frank Headley of Grand Rapids.

We wish to express our gratitude to the friends and neighbors, who have 
rendered us the kindness and help during our husband and father’s long 
illness, and also at the funeral services.
