Hubbardston is called upon to mourn the passing of one of her pioneer citizens 
and one who has been prominent in its affairs for a long period of years in 
the death of Oliver Clark Townsend, who died Monday morning about five o’clock.

Mr. Townsend was born July 28, 1838 in Jefferson county, New York.  At the age 
of 11 years he hired out to a farmer for $45 a year.  Coming with his people 
to Michigan in 1858 he found employment in Calhoun Co.  In 1860 he located in 
Ionia county which has since been his home.

In 1862 Mr. Townsend enlisted as a private in Co. K, 21st Michigan Infantry, 
serving during the Rebellion.  He participated in thirteen battles.  Soon 
after the battle of Chickamauga he received his commission as 1st Lieutenant.  
He also served as adjutant of his regiment.  He was mustered out at Detroit at 
the close of the war and received his discharge.

Returning to Hubbardston in 1865 Mr. Townsend went into partnership with his 
brother George in the sash and blind business.  Together they bored an 
artesian well---the old mineral spring—which is still flowing.

November 30, 1865 he was united in marriage to Miss Abbie E. Brayton, who died 
January 13, 1898.  On the 11th of September 1899 he was joined in marriage 
with Lena, eldest daughter of Dr. H. W. Browne.

About six years ago Mr. Townsend sold out the banking business which he had 
been engaged in for many years, having founded it in 1876.  He has been heard 
to remark during the past five years that there was not a person living in 
Hubbardston who was a resident when he located there.  He was a member of the 
Hubbardston Masonic lodge.

After an illness of only a week, he passed away the morning of September 19, 
1921, having attained the age of 83 years, one month and 22 days.  His wife 
and the only child of his first marriage—W.W. Townsend of Brown City, survive.
