Sept. 4, 1894 Mrs. Susan Van Allen, widow of George W. Van Allen, died Saturday night at her home on Lafayette street. Susan Reeder was born in Starkey, Yates county, N. Y. in February, 1812; was married to George W. Van Allen, from this same home – the home still being in the possession of the family. In early life she united with the Methodist Episcopal church, and has always borne a consistent, lovable Christian character. She was a great reader; always keeping up with the times; was quick at repartee, greeting everyone with a smile and a pleasant word. Her mind was bright and clear almost to the last. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Van Allen, of whom only two are now living; Mrs. L. B. Townsend and Herman Van Allen, the druggist. Her husband died a little more than six years ago, and will be remembered by many for his jovial, happy disposition, as well as for his many acts of kindness. Mr. and Mrs. Van Allen moved to Ionia over twenty years ago. Mrs. Van Allen was the last of a family of four sons and four daughters – the last of her generation. The funeral took place from the residence yesterday afternoon, the services being conducted by Rev. L. E. Lennox, pastor of the M. E. church, assisted by Rev. Dr. Thomas, rector of St. John’s Episcopal church. The music was the choir of the M. M. Church. Interment at Highland Park.
