The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Monday, September 18, 1967

Merle L. VanHouten, 65, Hastings, died Saturday at St. Marys hospital in Grand 
Rapids after a lengthy illness.  Born November 11, 1901 in Ionia county, the 
son of Archie and Minnie Backus VanHouten he married Gertrude Kauffman, 43 
years ago.  She survives.

They moved to Hastings 32 years ago where Mr. VanHouten was an auto mechanic 
operating his own business and also served as an auto mechanic at Hastings.

Besides his wife, survivors include four sons, Trevor and Arlo of Middleville, 
Jack and Jerry of Hastings; nine grandchildren and one sister, Frieda 
VanHouten of Lake Odessa.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m.  Rev. Marvin Zimmerman will 
officiate with burial in Lakeside cemetery.

Subsequent Publication:  Wednesday, September 20, 1967

Rev. Marvin Zimmerman officiated at funeral services Tuesday in Lake Odessa 
for Merle VanHouten of Hastings who died Saturday.  Burial was in Lakeside 
cemetery.  Bearers were Gerald Augst, Alden Pritchard, George L. Meyers, John 
Schultz, Jack Clinton and Gary Cole.
