Elijah S. Welch died at 9 o’clock Monday morning.  He had been in broken health 
for three years, and since suffering a stroke of paralysis a year ago had been 
unable to do any labor.  He was born in Keene 56 years ago, his parents being 
Vine and Parnel Welch, widely known pioneers.  He was married to Miss Mary 
Hunter in 1875, who survives with a son, Melbourne, 18 years old.  Mr. Welch 
served as marshal of the city, and four years as alderman.  He was energetic 
and efficient in the performance of duty.  He was in the employ of W.C. Page & 
Co. eight years and was well known through the county and highly respected.

There was a large attendance of long-time friends at the funeral of Elijah S. 
Welch Wed. afternoon, and the floral testimonials were abundant and beautiful.  
The Maccabees, of which order he was a member, attended in a body.  The service 
was by Rev. Dr. Lewis of the Methodist church, and the singing by Mrs. Thane 
Benedict and Mrs. Wm. Todd.  The bearers were: W.F. Marquette, H. Witzel, S. 
Downing and A. Anderson.  Interment was in Oak Hill cemetery.
