                 RESIDENT HERE 40 YEARS DIES ON SATURDAY

Mrs.Phoebe Welch, 70, passed away at the United Memorial hospital in Greenville 
after a brief illness.She lived at 109 1/2 W.Main street.

The deceased was born in Champagne,Illinois, September 29, 1885. Her maiden name 
was Buchanan.She had been a local resident for the past 40 years, coming here 
from Ithaca, where she lived for a short time.

In 1917 she was married to Clarence Shepard, who preceded her in death in 
February,1945. She was married for the second time in 1949 to Frank Welch. He 
died in 1952.

Survivors include one daughter Mrs.Elbert (Lyndelle) Mier of this city; one son, 
Warren Shepard of Muskegon; two sisters,Mrs.Erma McKinstry of Pontiac and 
MRs.Bessie Phillepy of Champagne,Illinois; two brothers, Harry Metters of Ithaca 
and Clinton Metters of Alma and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at  2:00 o'clock from the Huffman 
Funeral Home. Rev. Wilbur Kirby, pastor of the local Church of God officiated. 
Burial was in the Old City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Charles Mier, Sr., Lynn Higgins, Glen Holcomb, Irwin Burns, 
Doyle Ryan and Fred Mier.
