The Ionia Daily Standard, Friday, January 25, 1889

Died—at the residence of James M. Caldwell in the township of Ionia, State of 
Michigan, on the morning of December 13, 1888, Mrs. Nancy Wood, at the 
advanced age of 86 years, 2 months and 10 days.

Nancy Brace (her maiden name) was born in the town of Northmoreland, county of 
Luzerne, Pennsylvania, in 1802.  She was married to Alvah Wood, February 6, 
1824, and soon after went with her husband to their home at Minnisink, Orange 
county, N.Y.  Then, in the year 1844, moved with her husband and four children—
two sons and two daughters—to Clinton county, Mich., which was at that time 
almost a wilderness, it having been only nine years since the first white man 
set foot on the soil of Clinton.  Many privations and hardships incidental to 
pioneer life were here endured.  Then in 1850 her husband died, soon after 
which she came to Ionia, and most of the time since has resided with her 
daughter, Mrs. James M. Caldwell, who is now the only surviving member of her 
family.

In early life she embraced the cause of Christ, and was a consistent member of 
the Presbyterian church, until the Christian church was organized in Ionia by 
the Rev. Isaac Errett, by whom she was immersed, and remained a firm believer 
in the faith of the Lord Jesus Christ until her death, and was ever glad to be 
in her place in church while her health permitted.  She was a devoted 
Christian, a true and faithful friend, and most kind and loving mother, very 
much respected and beloved by all who knew her.  She was in failing health for 
some years previous to her death, and longed to go and be at rest with her 
Savior.

A magnificent floral tribute was wreathed inside the casket around her head, 
and she seemed to be sleeping sweetly amid the flowers she loved so much.  And 
thus we bade her farewell, till we meet her where parting is not.
