DR. A.W. SEGER
Well Known for Many Years as a Successful Physician
And Lenawee Pioneer, Died at an Early Hour This Morning.

Old age and grip has again played the part of the grim destroyer, this time 
settling on another of Lenawee's pioneers, Dr. A.W. Seger, a physician, who, 
during his practice attained a most excellent standing in this city.  Death 
occurred at 7:15 this morning at his home, No. 60 Michigan avenue.  The many 
friends unite with the relatives in mourning the demise of this well known and 
highly respected citizen.  The funeral will be held from the late home at 10 
o'clock Monday morning, and will be conducted under the auspices of Adrian 
Lodge, No. 19, F.A.M., of which organization Dr. Seger had long been a member.

Dr. Alexander W. Seger was born October 15, 1822, at Chittenden, Rutland 
county, Vermont.  He was a son of Aaron and Rebecca Seger.  The doctor came to 
this section in the summer of 1845, after having been graduated from Worcester 
(Mass.) medical college, and at about the time of engaging in practice he 
secured a tract of land on section 22 in Rome township, since which time his 
connection with the life of Adrian and Lenawee county has been like an open 
book.  he stayed with his parents in Vermont until he reached his majority, 
although at an early age he determined to enter one of his professions.  
Becoming interested in medicine he entered the office of Dr. J.G. Ross, at 
Middlebury, Vt.  He studied there four years, after which he commenced 
practice.  He took a course of lectures at the Woodstock medical college, and 
completed his course of medicine at Worcester, as above mentioned.  In the 
spring of 1848, he removed from his farm to Rome Center, where he engaged in 
practice.  This he continued until 1870, when in the spring of that year he 
sold his property in Rome and removed to this city, purchasing the residence 
which he has since owned, at the corner of Michigan avenue and Madison 
street.  For many years he was noted as one of our ablest and most successful 
physicians, and had a large and wide spread clientage.  For a time he was 
interested in the drug trade, but after 1880 did nothing in that line.

Dr. Seger was married September 30, 1847, to Miss Philura M. Stockwell, the 
wedding taking place at the home of the bride, in Monroe.  She was the mother 
of five children, Ellen J., born July 28, 1848, and became the wife of W.A. 
Lord and went to St. Joe, Mo.  She now resides at Everett, Washington.  Lucy 
T. died in infancy.  Viola M. was born April 20, 1853, and became the wife of 
James Shaffer, of Adrian.  She now resides at Everett, Washington.  Ida Belle 
and Aaron W. died in infancy.  Mrs. Seger died on January 20, 1859.  On 
October 11, 1859, Dr. Seger was married to Miss Olive L., daughter of James 
and Lydian Eggleston, a native of Pittsfield, Rutland county, Vermont.  To 
them were born three children, Frank G., who died at the age of fiveyears in 
1866.  Dr. Fred Seger was born in 1863 and died a few years ago, honored and 
respected by all who knew him.  Mattie was born December 19, 1867, and is the 
wife of Charles R. Burr, of the mail carrier force of this city, residing on 
Michigan avenue.  Mrs. Seger survives her husband and will in future make her 
home with her daughter, Mrs. Burr.

Dr. Seger has long been a man of strict habits, having never tasted a drop of 
intoxicating liquor for beverage purposes.  He has always taken a great 
interest in the welfare of Adrian and Lenawee county, and has been numbered 
among our foremost and most reliable citizens.  For the past few years his 
health has not permitted his giving attention to his practice, so that he has 
practially dropped out of that active life which had characterized his whole 
history.

Dr. Seger is the oldest of four brothers and the first to die.  G.A. and S.E. 
Seger, two of the brothers, reside at Brandon, Vt., while the other brother, 
B.E. Seger, is an old resident of Rome.  Two sisters also survive, and both 
are here, coming here about two weeks ago on a visit  They are Mrs. Cornelia 
Seger Lyon and Miss Pamelia Seger, and both reside at Brandon, Vt.  They 
intended to return home Friday, but the illness of Dr. Seger prevented.
