History of the Project

Many years ago, the City of Sault Ste Marie microfilmed the sexton's records for the Maple Ridge Cemetery - also known as the City Cemetery and the Ashmun Hill Cemetery - on Ashmun Street. A copy of this microfilm was given to the Bayliss Public Library (BPL).

As part of their many volunteer projects at BPL, Gail Pratt and Marjorie Cooper began working with the microfilm copy of the Maple Ridge Cemetery records. The goal of this project was to create as accurate a record as possible of both the history of the cemetery and the burials there, since the current cemetery is in urgent need of restoration. To reach this goal, BPL obtained a loan from the City Clerk of the earliest City Council Minutes. The Chippewa County Clerk cooperated by permitting the project volunteers to come in and double check their transcriptions against county death records. The River of History Museum, the current custodian of the original sexton's book, allowed BPL to make photocopies of an existing copy of the book since the original is now too fragile for this purpose. The current listing of burials includes records from the Sexton's Record Book only. Entries will be updated and corrected as additional data is transcribed and formatted.

Disclaimer

Every burial in the cemetery has not been documented. Early city records state that a fence had to be erected around the cemetery because people from outlying farms were making unauthorized burials in the cemetery. These burials are not part of the Sexton's record. The records examined for this project relate only to the two cemeteries on Ashmun Street, the City Cemetery and the Catholic Cemetery. The City Cemetery was closed in 1901 because there was no available land for burials. Shortly befire this, Riverside Cemetery was opened on Riverside Drive. Some graves were eventually moved from Maple Ridge to either Riverside or Pine Grove Cemeteries.

Transcription Conventions

Since all the records are handwritten and in various states of legibility, there may be errors in the transcription. If the transcriber guessed at the spelling of a word or was unable to read a word or phrase due to a gap in the text, this is indicated in the transcription by placing the word or text in brackets. [ ]

In most cases, the Lot number is equivalent to the page number the record is found on in the Sexton's Book. If the record is recorded on a page different from the Lot number, the correct page number is noted in the Notes field.

The Notes field contains notes recorded in the Sexton's Book and comments by the transcribers.

The following abbreviations are used in the transcription:

In cases where the surname of the deceased isn't known, "Unknown" is used as the surname.

In cases where a child died young and the given name was not included in the record, "Baby" is used as the given name in cases where the child was under two years of age. "Child" is used for children older than two years old.

All original spellings are preserved as closely as possible
