Date posted: Tuesday, January 26, 1999

Katherine (Berg) McIlrath was born October 5, 1853, in the small town of Altenkirchen, in Rheinish Bavaria, Germany. When she was only six months old her parents, Jacob and Elizabeth (Morganstern) Berg, took her and her brothers and sister to America. Her mother must have had her hands full for the fifty days it took them to cross the Atlantic and sail up the St. Lawrence River. They sailed through storms and ice. At times it was so cold that everyone stayed in bed to keep warm. As they made their way up the St. Lawrence, they stopped at Quebec, Montreal, and another Canadian harbor, each time changing ships. When they arrived in Lewiston they took a train to Buffalo. From there they took a steamship to Cleveland, Ohio. After going by train to Grafton, they paid a farmer five dollars to take them and their belongings by wagon to Russia in Lorain county Ohio. According to Katherine's obituary, the family made its first home in a rebuilt abandoned log church in Russell, Ohio. Katherine's father was a talented artist whose paintings can still be found at the Rijks Museum in Amsterdam. What he planned to do once they arrived in America, and what he actually did to support his family I have not been able to discover. They must have had high hopes for a good life in the New World, but before Katherine was a grown woman, Jacob died leaving his wife and children to fend for themselves. On September 10, 1870, when Katherine was nearly seventeen, she married James W. McIlrath. James had been orphaned at a young age. According to family tradition his parents' name was Gallagher but he had taken the name of his adopted parents. The young couple made their home in Oberlin, Ohio for several years. At least three of their four children were born there. In the 1880s they moved to Benzonia, Michigan driving thirty-five miles by sleigh from Traverse City, the nearest rail point. Katherine attended the Joy Field Methodist church near Benzonia, walking six miles every Sunday morning to be a regular attendant. In the succeeding years, Katherine and James lived on farms north of Shelby, Michigan in Oceana County and at Stony Lake. Shortly after moving to the area, Katherine began to lose her eyesight. Despite that she managed her household duties, including cooking, baking and sewing without assistance, and was widely known for her excellent bread. James built his own ships and a pier on Lake Michigan near the mouth of Stony Creek. He sailed on the Great Lakes for many years, hauling fruit, lumber and wooden shingles from the Claybanks area to ports near and far. In his later years he owned and operated a boat livery and sold fishing tackle. Together they raised three daughters; Huldah (Leslie Hulbert), Edith (Ace Haggerty) and Jennie (Guy Legg), and a son James Lewis (Nora May Downey). Katherine's husband James died in 1925 when she was seventy-two. In her later years Katherine lived with her daughter Huldah in her home east of Shelby. After fracturing her hip in a fall early in 1945, Katherine's health declined until she died shortly after her ninety-second birthday in October of that year. She had been a resident of Shelby nearly sixty years and had won the genuine admiration of Shelby residents by her cheerfulness in spite of having been blind for over forty-five years. Sources: A transcript of Jacob Berg's log of the crossing to America, Katherine's obituary.

Orlando J. Elwell has shown up on the 1900 census as having lived in Oceana County at the time the census was taken. He had 7 other Elwells living with him at the time, including Justin Elwell, who I believe was my uncle, married to Flossie and lived in Newaygo County for a long time. Surnames: POWERS

Mike, I'll send you a personal e-mail, but put a few facts here. I am descended from Orin POWERS, who is a brother of Silas, Ephraim and Charles who were in the 1870 Oceana County Census. Lucy POWERS Putney, Solomon POWERS, and Phebe POWERS Putney, other brothers and sisters were in Benzie County, MI, in 1870. I didn't find Sarah POWERS Ghastin-Wing-Garfield-Vaughn, but Lucius Garfield, who she married on Aug. 10, 1870, was in Benzie County. I am just looking for information about these people and their descendents. I'm reading birth, death and marriage records from Benzie County on LDS microfilm, but the mormons didn't copy the Oceana records. So either I come to Michigan someday or find someone else to get the info for me.

In Oceana County:

I would like any additional information about the following families if possible. I am trying to determine from what area in Denmark they emigrated to Oceana County. I'd also like to confirm or add to the information I list here, which came from one of my great-aunts, no longer alive.

Mr. and Mrs. Jens NIELSEN arrived in Pentwater from Denmark May 2, 1868 (?) with daughters Maren, age 11 (my great-grandmother), Cena, Mary, and Lene(?) perhaps sons as well.

Christ Thompson (Thomsen?) (my great-grandfather, age 19) arrived in Pentwater from Denmark with his family in 1869, married Maren (Marion Marian?) Neilsen July 1873.

Also I'd love to get more information about the substantial immigration of Danes to this area, why they chose this area, and what type of work they pursued. Thanks!

Also, if you get a chance to come to Oceana Co. they have a lovely historical society with several helpful people who probably can share a story or two. They are only opened on Weds. or by appt. Hopefully, they will go online in the future as they have much to share about Oceana Co. and it's ancestors. Good luck!
