CHAPTER VI

ALBERT LAWTON

First Generation

1. Albert1 LAWTON, son of JOSIAH T. LAWTON and BETSY BRADLEY, was born in Gouverneur, St. Lawrence, New York 02 APR 1828. Albert died 29 JUL 1890 Ottawa Co, Michigan, at 62 years of age. His body was interred AUG 1890 in Coopersville, Ottawa, Michigan, Coopersville Cemetery. He married Mary Ann LOFTUS Ottawa Co, Michigan, 4 APR 1851. Mary Ann was born in Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland 20 JAN 1832, the daughter of Patrick LOFTUS and Catherine WALSH. She died 22 OCT 1914 in Wright Twp, Ottawa, Michigan, at 82 years of age. Her body was interred OCT 1914 in Coopersville, Ottawa, Michigan, Coopersville Cemetery. Albert came west to Ottawa County with his parents at the age of about 17 and helped clear land and build a cabin for the family. He was very active in the formation of the community of Coopersville, and kept diaries and records of the early community. He was on the village council of Coopersville in the 1870s as a trustee and was instrumental in forming the beginning ordinances of the town. Albert helped to build the Congregational Church building in Coopersville, which was later purchased by the Methodist Episcopal Church. It now stands at the corner of Church and Mechanic Streets and is known as the United Methodist Church. When the original developer of Coopersville, Benjamin Cooper, returned to New York, his sons ran his sawmill for a time before they also decided to follow their father home. Cooper then left the sawmill business for Albert to run. It was later sold to W.F. Storrs, George W. Danforth, Charles Hosmer and A.C. Ellis. Albert had an artesian well on his property. In August 1887 a fire burned his principal grain and hay barn. In 1888 Albert went into partnership with William Dorgan, his son-in-law, purchasing a cheese factory in Coopersville. He and his wife had 10 children--7 boys, 3 girls--6 children married.

The Coopersville Observer, January 25, 1884 - Albert Lawton and several other citizens of Coopersville are getting their supply of ice from Lamont. The quality is first-class, eight inches of clear blue ice.

The Coopersville Observer, February 20, 1885: Mr. A. Lawton has a flowing well on his place in the east part of the village. It is 114 feet deep and runs a continuous stream above the surface of the ground. This is the second artesian well in Coopersville. Others will probably be bored during the coming summer. It is the only way pure and wholesome water can be obtained in the village. Mr. Joseph Lillie, who makes a business of boring wells and selling wind-mills, is the man who takes the credit of procuring these flowing wells.

The Coopersville Observer 1 August 1890, Page 7: ALBERT LAWTON DEAD
The death of Mr. Albert Lawton, which was foreshadowed by his dangerous illness, occurred at 7 o'clock Tuesday morning last. He had not been out of danger since his fall in the barn, four weeks ago, but yet his death is a severe shock to his family and friends and the community at large. He had been so long a resident here that his departure from among us is keenly felt by all. He was a quiet, unostentatious man, of absolute integrity, generous impulses, and of shrewd, business instincts. He was universally esteemed for his honesty of purpose and trustworthiness. Take him all in all, there is left among us none better than Albert Lawton. The funeral took place from the residence yesterday forenoon and was largely attended. Many friends from abroad and residents of the village and vicinity by the hundreds availed themselves of the opportunity to gaze for the last time upon well-known features, and when the services were opened the house and grounds were thronged with people. The services were conducted by Rev. George Varion of the M.E. church. The pall bearers were, J.V.B. Goodrich, Alex. Noble, Ozias Noble, Ira Kendall, Henry Durphy honory; R. Johnson, D. Cleland, S.J. Treloar, S.C. McLellan, Geo. Mead, G. Rankaus. The floral offerings were abundant, right and beautiful, expressing high regards and love for the deceased. The deceased leaves a widow and ten children, seven girls and 3 boys, six of whom are married. The bereaved family have the sympathies of all citizens.

The Coopersville Observer, Oct 30, 1914: Mary Ann Loftus was born in Baltimore, Maryland, January 20, 1832, and departed from this life at the home of her son Thomas, in Reno, on October 22, 1914, aged 82 years, 9 months and 2 days. At an early age she moved to Indiana, and at a later date came to Michigan with her parents, settling in Wright township. She was united in marriage to Albert Lawton on April 4, 1851. To this union were born ten children, nine of whom are living: Mrs. Louisa J. Griffin, of Grand Rapids; Mrs. Sarah A. Parker, of Spring Lake; Mrs. Dell Hedges, of Coopersville; Thomas W. Lawton, of Reno; Mrs. Julia A. Lillie, Coopersville; Wilbur W. Lawton, of Coopersville; C.D. Lawton, of Grand Rapids; Mrs. Mae Waite, of Hart, and Mrs. Nellie Bechtel, of Shelby. A daughter, Mrs. Flora V. Dorgan, passed away in 1900. Besides her children she leaves fifteen granddchildren, three great-grandchildren, one sister and one brother, besides numerous relatives and friends to mourn their loss. The shadow has fallen and it may be for the best--

"But it is not for us to know why such things be,
It is ours to bear the seeming stern decree
As best we may when heart is torn from heart."
"There is no death! The stars go down
To rise upon another shore,
And bright in heaven's jeweled crown
They shine forever more!
There is no death! The choicest gifts
That heaven has kindly sent to earth
Are ever first to seek again
The country of their birth."

From "Chronicles of Coopersville" by James and Lillian Budzynski p. 106: LAWTON FAMILY - "The Lawtons are of English and Welch (from Wales) decent. Josiah Lawton was born in Rhode Island. They were early settlers in Polkton Township. They came with son Albert and his wife Mary Ann (Loftus) and settled where the current high school property is located. They built a log cabin at first and later the first frame house in the settlement. Albert and Mary Ann had 8 or 9 children. Many stayed in the area. Albert was on the village council in the 1870's. Albert was born in Governeur, St. Lawrence County, New York on April 2, 1828. Albert and his brothers all lived within a few miles of Polkton Township except Daniel who was a minister in Tennessee. The brothers were Henry, Lewis, Harvey, Perley and Daniel. Mary Kay (Lillie) Cuson's grandfather Thomas Walter Lawton (1858-1949), who was the son of Albert, left the area his scrapbooks which were an aid in compiling this book."

Second Generation

2. Louisa J.2 LAWTON (Albert 1 ) was born Ottawa Co, Michigan 15 FEB 1852. Louisa died 29 MAY 1932 Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan, at 80 years of age. Her body was interred 31 MAY 1932 in Coopersville, Ottawa, Michigan, Coopersville Cemetery. She married Michael R. GRIFFIN, Capt. in Coopersville, Ottawa, Michigan, 14 NOV 1869. Michael was born in Galien, County Cork, Ireland 10 NOV 1844. Michael was the son of Patrick GRIFFIN and Alice. Michael died 3 JUL 1892 Ottawa Co, Michigan, at 47 years of age. His body was interred 5 JUL 1892 in Coopersville, Ottawa, Michigan, Coopersville Cemetery. He served in U.S.A. Co. E, 9th N.Y. Cavalry 2 Nov 1861-2 Nov 1864. He received gunshot wounds through the right leg and shoulder and was imprisoned in Libby prisoner of war camp for 5 months. He was a charter member of the G.A.R. in Coopersville, the Charles Randall Post No. 238. He was a farmer and general merchant. In May 1889 he took up homesteading in the Upper Peninsula. He returned before long to Coopersville. He lived in Grand Rapids in 1914.

The Coopersville Observer, November 21, 1884: The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. M.R. Griffin gave them a surprise on the 15th anniversary of their marriage, which occurred last Friday evening. About sixty guests were present. The presents consisted of an elegant silver tea-set, etc., etc. It was a very enjoyable affair.

The Coopersville Observer, May 3, 1889: Mr. M.R. Griffin is in the U.P. where he has taken up a homestead, containing considerable pine.

Coopersville Observer July 8, 1892: A Sudden Summons.
On Sunday last Mr. Michael R. Griffin, one of our old and respected citizens, came to his death under most grievous circumstances. Mr. Griffen and family and Thos. Lawton and family went to Gooding to visit Mr. and Mrs. C.D. Lawton. On Sunday morning they decided to have a picnic dinner on the banks of Crockery Lake and procured a horse and buggy and drove to the lake. Mr. Griffen and C.D. Lawton went on a railroad velocipede and took an old scow to cross the lake. After visiting for a time, dinner was prepared and before it was entirely finished Mr. Griffen said he thought he would take a swim. His wife remonstrated on account of his health, but he walked leisurely to the shore and disappeared for a few moments and was then seen to approach the water. C.D. Lawton saw him start to go into the water and ran towards him, but Mr. Griffen had pushed the scow out and started to swim to it, when he called for help, saying his feet were caught in the weeds. Mr. Lawton sprang into the water to aid him, grasped him by the hand and helped him towards the shore. Mr. Griffen released his hold and Mr. Lawton supposed he was safe, but instead of being safe he immediately sank out of sight and did not rise again. It was four hours before the body was recovered. An inquest was held which revealed the fact that there was no water in the body, which indicated that death occurred before he sank. It is thought that he died of heart failure caused by excitement. The funeral took place Tuesday afternoon, under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity. A large number of the G.A.R. post were also present. The funeral sermon was delivered by Rev. Geo. Varion, of Grandville, formerly pastor of the M.E. church, of this place. It is a very sad case and his family are greatly afflicted in the loss of a husband and father and they have the sympathy of the entire community in their hour of affliction. Mr. Griffin was born in Galien, county of Cork, Ireland, November 10, 1844. Came to America at the age of thirteen and lived in the town of Fine, St. Lawrence county, N.Y., until he enlisted in the Federal army in November 1861, in Company G, Ninth New York Cavalry. He was twice promoted and held the rank of captain at the close of the service. He moved to Michigan in 1865. He was for many years a leading business man at this place, a prominent member of the Masonic fraternity, an active member of Randall post, of which he was twice commander. In politics he was a radical Republican and was a well known figure in the local councils of his party. He was married to Miss Louisa Lawton in 1869, and was the father of three children. A daughter, Cassa, and an infant son, Harold, survive him, Albert being deceased.

Coopersville Observer, December 28, 1894: Mrs. M.R. Griffin and son Harold spent Christmas at Lyons with her sister, Mrs. Wm. Dorgan.

The Coopersville Observer, August 20, 1886, Page 1:
DEATH CLAIMS ANOTHER. - Sorrow and gloom has been cast over the household of Mr. and Mrs. M.R. Griffin. The sad, grim messenger, death, has laid his cold damp hand upon their only son, Albert, removing him to the eternal "home beyond the river," from which no traveler returns. He died suddenly on Friday morning last. Mrs. Griffin awoke him at the usual hour, and upon his non-appearance at breakfast she again went to his room, supposing him to be yet asleep and found him lying on the bed, partly dressed, but the spirit had taken its flight. He was afflicted with heart disease and it is supposed that was the cause of his demise. His age was fifteen years, four months and twenty-seven days. The funeral took place from the Catholic church, Berlin, at which there was a very large attendance, seventy vehicles forming the funeral procession from here to the church. The interment was made in the Catholic cemetery at that place. Mr. and Mrs. Griffin have the heart-felt sympathy of numerous friends in this sudden, sad bereavement.

A Heart-felt Card of Thanks - To our friends and neighbors, and expressly to our dear and next door neighbors and associates, who so generously shared our grief with us and did everything in their power to heal the wounds, which it pleased the Supreme Architect of the Universe to inflict upon us, by taking from us our dearly beloved boy. While our hearts are full and mourn our loss, we trust in his Creator that our loss may be his gain, and while we bow submissive to the dispensation, we mourn as mortals must, our irreparable loss,
Respects to all, Mr. & Mrs. M.R. Griffin.

+ 13 ii. Cassa L. GRIFFIN was born 1875.

14 iii. Harold H. GRIFFIN was born in Michigan 10 OCT 1892. Harold died 28 NOV 1920 at 28 years of age. His body was interred 1920 in Coopersville, Ottawa, Michigan, Coopersville Cemetery. Harold was not yet born at the time of his father's death in Crockery Lake, so he was raised totally by his mother.

The fourteenth annual reunion of the Lawton family was held Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E.N. Parker in Spring Lake, in __?__ Mrs. Parker, it also being Mr. Parker's sixty seventh birthday. On account of sickness and so many members living so far away, it was not as well attended as usual, only fourteen members being present. Dinner was served in picnic style, which all enjoyed. N. Parker; secretary, T. W. Lawton; treasurer, Mrs. Colon C. Lillie. The program was omitted as there were so many absent which were to participate. Edwin N. Parker, a resident of Spring Lake and a well known citizen of this community, passed away this morning at shortly after eight o'clock at his home in Spring Lake. Mr. Parker had been in ill health for the last six months, and for several days his condition has been considered alarming. Practically no hope could be held out for his recovery. He had been a resident for about sixteen years, and during that time he had increased an already wide acquaintance in Grand Haven. Mr. Parker was born in Warsaw, N.Y., May 27, 1850. On November 25, 1872, he was married to Sarah Ann Lawton, who survives him. Their only child died in infancy many years ago. For thirty six years Mr. Parker was engaged in the hardware business in the village of Coopersville, having a very wide acquaintance among the people of that community. He retired from active business and moved to Spring Lake in 1905, where he has since made his home. Funeral will be held Sunday afternoon with services at the home in Spring Lake at one o'clock and in the Methodist church in Coopersville at 2:30. Burial will be in Coopersville Cemetery.

After her marriage to E. N. Parker, they ran a hardware store here for a good many years, retiring from business in 1906, after which they moved to Spring Lake, where they lived until Mr. Parker's death in 1921. Then she returned to her childhood home, and had lived here since that time. No children survive, one having died in infancy. She is survived by two brothers, T. W. Lawton and Wilbur W. Lawton, both of Coopersville, and by four sisters, Mrs. Frank Hedges and Mrs. Colon C. Lillie of Coopersville, and Mr. J. J. Waite and Mrs. O. E. Bechtel, who reside at Shelby, and by many nieces and nephews and friends. At the time of her death she was the oldest resident of Coopersville, who was born here. She was a member of a family which was among the early settlers here, and her grandmother was the first person buried in the local cemetery. Mrs. Parker was a loyal friend of many, and her cheery smile and sunny disposition will be missed.

"And ever near us, tho unseen,
The dear immortal spirits tread;
For all the boundless universe
Is life--there are no dead."

Funeral services for Frank Hedges, 89, pioneer resident of the Lamont and Coopersville communities, who died Wednesday evening, March 24, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Boonstra, 241 43rd St., in Grand Rapids, were held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Free Methodist church. A short service was held at 1:30 at the Kammeraad Funeral Home.  Rev. K. Brady, pastor of the Free Methodist church, and Rev. Mrs. C. Butler, of Bradley, had charge of the services. Irene and Rachel Butler, daughters of Mrs. C. Butler, sang two appropriate numbers. Prior to the service at 2:30, the body lay in state in the church, and many friends and relatives of the former Coopersville business man, and pioneer, paid their respects to one who had given a great deal to the civic and fraternal life of the community. He was borne to his last resting place in the Coopersville cemetery by six former fraternal and business associates: George Leggett, Ed Davison, Harley McClain, Porter Reed, Homer Lillie and Howard Erwin.

From "Lamont on the Grand 1835-1960": The Steeles sold their store goods to Miner Hedges and he kept the store there for several years, after which he built a store on Lot 3 of the Middleburg Plat. The old cracker barrel, large dill pickles in vats of brine, mingling odors with the smell of rubber on new shoes (too expensive to buy) and the clean, fresh smell of new calico on fat colorful bolts. A new spinning wheel sat in the corner, for sale. My mother spun and wove cloth for most of the family wardrobe. We were usually all dressed in the same stuff, drab gray-brown died from butternut and walnut, loomed in one same piece of goods. The cozy, story-telling time around the pot-bellied stove came while the men were waiting the arrival of the stern-wheeler up the river to be unloaded at Steele's Landing. The last saw mill [in Lamont] was later owned by Miner Hedges and son, Frank.
But back to my wanderings through this village, both familiar yet extremely strange. I wonder if the old Frank Hedges house still stands. Frank's father, Miner Hedges lived there before him east of the top of the plank hill. There remains no trace of the bridge across the Grand built in 1866 by Brazee and Walker. At the time it was the only bridge between Grand Haven and Grand Rapids and I remember that Miner Hedges ran it for five years closing the swing in 1878 and tearing down the three spans.

Fidelia "Delia" E. LAWTON and Francis "Frank" W. HEDGES had the following children:

By 1930 he was married and had moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he was a switchman for the railroad. Miner had no children of his own.

Coopersville Observer, Friday, December 29, 1949, Page 1: T.W. LAWTON, OLDEST COOPERSVILLE RESIDENT, PASSED AWAY TUESDAY
Coopersville is today mourning the loss of its oldest resident, Thomas W. Lawton, 91, who passed away shortly before noon, Tuesday, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lee Lillie, after a three weeks' illness. Mr. Lawton not only was the oldest resident of Coopersville, but had been active in the business and community life and few men had taken a greater interest in the progress of Coopersville than he. He had served on the village council, the school board, had operated a hardware store and funeral home here, and during all these years had kept an accurate history of the community, compiling three scrapbooks in which one may find all the happenings of the years. Mr. Lawton was born in Coopersville June 9, 1858. He was the son of Albert and Mary Lawton, who came to Michigan in 1845 and settled on a farm near Coopersville. Two years later his father built the first frame house in Coopersville, located on what is now Eastern Avenue. He was educated in the Brown school, which was located at Peck's Corners, a mile north of Coopersville, and which gave way to the Coopersville school, where he also attended. Mr. Lawton was a member of the school board in Coopersville at the time the "new school" was built to replace the structure now located on the northwest corner of Main St. and Eastern Ave. and in the cornerstone is an autographed picture of him and other members of the board. He was employed by the Towner Hardware store in Muskegon, and later opened the Lawton Hardware and Funeral concern in Coopersville. Mr. Lawton also had served as a member of the village council and for one term as village treasurer. In 1886 he was married to Miss Lavissa Lee, who died in 1894. He was married in 1898 to Miss Emma Gray who passed away in 1921. In 1910 the Lawton family moved to Reno and for 11 years he conducted the mill and store there, returning to Coopersville in 1921, where he has since made his home. Mr. Lawton was also a member of the Coopersville Methodist church. Through his hobby, Mr. Lawton had become the unofficial historian of the Coopersville area. The three scrap books which he had made and the incidents of the early history of the community which he recalled were a source of pleasure not only to him, but are invaluable to Coopersville. Mr. Lawton leaves three daughters, Mrs. Kathryn Foote, of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Millie Jones of Winlock, Wash., and Mrs. Lee Lillie of Coopersville; a son, Lee, died in 1886 at the age of 22 months; a brother, Wilbur Lawton, of Coopersville; two sisters, Mr. J.J. Waite of Muskegon and Mrs. C.E. Bechtel of Shelby, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 at the Posthumus Funeral Home, with the Rev. J.L. Ward officiating, and burial was in the Coopersville cemetery. Pallbearers were six grandsons, Thomas, Lee Jr. and Charles Lillie, Clifford Cuson, Robert Leigh, and Howard Foote.

The beautiful floral tributes were indeed a tribute to the memory of one who "loved his fellowmen," who had lived an exemplary life and whose thoughts were always of others. Among the floral tributes was one from "The Brown School." At the last reunion an offering was taken and the funds were used for the purchase of these flowers. Mr. Lawton's brother, Wilbur, is the last survivor of this reunion group. Mr. Lawton's philosophy of life can well be summed up in a poem written by Douglas Malloch, and found in his scrap book.

"Try Not to Fret"
Try not to fret about the road
You traveled yesterday, the load
You carried yesterday. Today
Is here to live in its own way.
The world is fresh with dawn and dew;
Lay down the old, take up the new.
Try not to fret about the task
You'll meet tomorrow, not to ask
About tomorrow. You will find
Today needs all your heart and mind.
Whatever is tomorrow's care
Tomorrow let tomorrow bear.
Try not to fret about the loss
Of yesterday, about the cross
Of yesterday. Try not to fear
About tomorrow. What is here
Is not tomorrow, but today
To live and love in its own way.

His body was interred 4 DEC 1943 in Coopersville, Ottawa, Michigan, Coopersville Cemetery. Colon graduated from State Agricultural College (now MSU) in 1884 and was a local teacher and principal, teaching in the Lamont school. He was appointed Postmaster of Coopersville 13 FEB 1889, contributed many articles to the Michigan Farmers magazine and was a member of the Coopersville Masonic Lodge No. 122. He was also a County School Commissioner. He owned a large farm at what once was called Titusville about a mile east of Coopersville just inside Wright Twp. He raised prized jersey cattle and excellent crops. Soon after the turn of the century, a group of Ottawa County residents planned to run Colon for governor, and his nomination was favored by several Michigan newspapers. Julia attended the Valparaiso Normal School. She was a local teacher and worked for the WCTU, was a county and district officer and was active in the local union. She was a charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Coopersville and for a long time was treasurer of the local cemetery association. She was one of the original members of the old Congregational Church in Coopersville, which later was purchased by the Methodist Episcopal and is now known as United Methodist.

The Coopersville Observer, February 20, 1885: Miss Julia Lawton and Miss Ella McGrath of this place were the only teachers in the township who kept school during last week's blizzard. They deserve a big credit mark.

The Coopersville Observer, May 29, 1885: Miss Julia Lawton, teacher in the intermediate department of our school, and one of Coopersville's most talented young ladies, leaves on Monday next for Valparaiso, Ind., where she will take a teacher's course in the college at that place.

The Coopersville Observer, June 19, 1885: HEARD FROM
Nearly two weeks had transpired after Miss Julia Lawton had left town for the Valparaiso Normal School, before her friends at Coopersville had any intelligence from her, and so great had become the anxiety of friends in regard to her safety etc, that telegrams were exchanged in her behalf. It seems Miss L. had duly written to relatives at Lamont, supposing the family here would hear from her thence, but in that they were disappointed. Yes: we can assure all anxious inquirers that Julia was all right at the latest intelligence, and, providence favoring, we may expect to greet her again about the last of August when she is expected to return richly laden with grand ideas and a vast store of valuable information for the benefit of pupils in the intermediate department of our school.

Coopersville Observer, June 28, 1889, Lamont: Grand Rapids Democrat: Colon C. Lillie, ex-pedagogue and ex-supervisor of the town of Tallmadge, Ottawa county, brother of Ottawa's prosecutor, and at present figuring as a burly, influential, horny-fisted son of toil near the village of Coopersville, yesterday graced the lobby of the Bridge Street house with his portly presence.

Coopersville Observer, July 12, 1889, Lamont: Colon C. Lillie and Miss Julia Lawton of Coopersville, have been hired as teachers for the coming year. Miss Lawton teaches nine months, commencing the first Monday in September; Mr. Lillie five months, commencing the first of November.

Coopersville Observer, October 2, 1891: Miss Louise Lillie secretary & treasurer of North Ottawa Teachers Association. C.C. Lillie Chairman.

Coopersville Observer, June 15, 1894: The K.O.T.M. Celebration at Lamont.
On the eleventh of June the Lamont Tent of the "Knights of the Maccabees" celebrated the thirteenth anniversary of the order by a picnic in Weatherwax's grove, on the bank of Grand River, east of Lamont. At ten o'clock the procession formed on the public square, Sir Knight Commander Lawton acting as Marshall, and to the sweet strains of the Lamont Band marched to the grove where the celebration proper was held. After attending to the wants of the inner man (and there was an abundant supply of eatables--even the mosquitoes filling themselves with the best blood of old Ottawa county), the music of the band gathered the people together, and the exercises were opened with prayer by the Rev. J. M. Sutherland, followed by a recitation entitled, "The Maccabee Goat," by Master Chesley Lawton. Next in order was a very interesting paper on the benefits that may be derived from fraternal societies, by Miss Cora M. Goodenow, county commissioner of schools. Miss Pearl Lawton gave a reading that was enjoyed by young and old alike. Mrs. Frances Cilley, in her usual excellent style, recited Burns' "Man was Made to Mourn." And then the orator of the day--Hon. C. C. Lillie-delivered a telling speech on the principles of the Order; the speech was instructive and entertaining and was listened to with deep interest by the large and intelligent audience. A notice of the picnic would not be complete without mention of the tight rope and slack-wire performance of Prof. Limber Charlie, "The Polkton Blondin," who was there in full war paint. And, as the sun was sinking in the west and the mosquitoes beginning to think of supper, the picnic was brought to a close; but it will long remain a bright spot in the memory of every loyal Maccabee.

From Portrait and Biographical Record of Ottawa County, 1893: Pages 203, 204 - COLON C. LILLIE, President of the Coopersville Creamery Company, and a successful agriculturist of Tallmadge Township, Ottawa County, was born in this township January 6, 1860. His father, Joel B. Lillie, was born in St. Lawrence County, N.Y., and emigrated to Michigan soon after attaining his majority. Here he engaged in lumbering and worked in various places until he purchased the land upon which our subject now resides. To the improvement and cultivation of this place he gave his attention until the death of his wife in 1883, when he removed to Coopersville, and made his home in that village until his death, September 19, 1893. He was a man of wealth, and was the owner of a large brick and tile factory in Coopersville. The mother of our subject was Sarah, daughter of Ammon and Annis Augur, who for many years resided in the State of New York, but afterward came to Michigan. Colon C. Augur, the uncle after whom our subject was named, is now on the list of retired army officers. To the marriage of Joel and Sarah Lillie there were born five children, two sons and three daughters. Edith S. married John M. Park and now resides in Wright Township, Ottawa County; Walter married Ella McGrath and makes his home in Grand Haven, this State; the third in order of birth is the subject of this notice; Emma E., who is unmarried, is a teacher in California; and Annis M., who is the wife of William E. Baxter, lives in Los Angeles, Cal. In his youth our subject received ordinary common-school advantages. At the age of twenty-one he entered the Michigan Agricultural College at Lansing, where he remained for four years, receiving the degree of Bachelor of Science, and gaining a practical education in farming. For four years he filled the position of Principal of the Coopersville schools, resigning it in order to accept the office of Commissioner of the county. He is the founder and President of the Coopersville Creamery Company, a flourishing enterprise which is established on a paying basis. At the present time he conducts the dairy department of the Practical Farmer & Fruit Grower, a popular agricultural paper published at Grand Rapids. A Republican in politics, Mr. Lillie has represented Tallmadge Township upon the County Board of Supervisors, and has also officiated as County School Commissioner. While Secretary of the County Board, he introduced the graded system into the schools of the county, and as a result of his efforts the standard of education has been greatly advanced. In his social connections, he is identified with the Knights of the Maccabees and Coopersville Lodge, A.F. & A.M. His marriage occurred on the 26th of June, 1890, and united him with Miss Julia A. Lawton, a daughter of Albert and Mary A. (Loftus) Lawton. The young couple reside upon the old Lillie homestead, where Mr. Lillie cultivates two hundred and forty acres of the finest land in Ottawa County. Everything on his place is of modern improvement, and he raises large crops of wheat, corn, oats and hay.

DEATH CLAIMS MRS. SCHAEFFER
Young Mother Passes Away This Morning from Pneumonia. Mrs. Elizabeth Marie Schaeffer, wife of Vern Schaeffer, passed away at five o'clock this morning at her home, 209 Jean avenue. Death was due to pneumonia, which followed an attack of influenza, with which she was taken ill about a week ago. An unusually pathetic feature of Mrs. Schaeffer's death is that a little daughter was born to her only two days ago. Mrs. Schaeffer was born at Coopersville, Mich., on July 18, 1892. While still a small child she moved from there to Lyons, Mich. At that place she later taught school for one year, and it was there that she became the bride of Vern Schaeffer. Mr. and Mrs. Schaeffer had made their home in this city for about five and a half years. She was a graduate of Michigan Agricultural college. She is survived by her husband, her infant daughter, her father; one brother, Albert W. Dorgan, of Toledo, O.; and two sisters, Mrs. H. J. Beel of Grand Rapids and Miss Lillian Dorgan of Sturgis. Private funeral services will be held from the home Wednesday afternoon at three o'clock, Rev. C. G. Speer officiating. Interment will be at Oak Lawn cemetery.
