Pavilion Township MI Sand Lake Cemetery (formerly known as the
Smith or Sand Hill Cemetery) located at Section 31, Sprinkle Rd, south of Nash avenue (across the street from the Lakeland Reformed Church at 10442 Sprinkle Rd). The Sand Lake Cemetery is inactive: no new burials; and largely filled .

From the 1929 records of Delmont M. Williams who transcribed the markers in the Sand Lake Cemetery:  Cemetery located on Sec. 31, Pavilion Township, Kalamazoo County.  This cemetery is often called Smith's Cemetery, but the name on the original plat is Sand Lake.  There are 15 tiers, numbered from west to east, the last on the east side is no. 15.  The lots are spaced north and south on the tiers. TRANSCRIPTION: This transcription was largely derived from photographs taken on 5/28/2002. I developed it as posted the photographs and related descriptions to the MIGEN Archives Tombstone Photo Project:

Alfred E. Branch 1846 - 1879 born Sept 26 1846; died Oct 18 1879 Oldest son of Thomas (buried in Sand Lake) and Jane Burstow Branch. Brother of Alva and Owen Branch both buried in Sand Lake. Alfred was born in the town of Canadice, Ontario County, New York.

Alva T. Branch 1855 - 1930 ( 4/23/1930) 6th child of Thomas (buried in Sand Lake) and Jane Burstow Branch.  Husband of Carrie A. Branch (buried in Sand Lake) Brother of Alfred and Owen Branch both buried in Sand Lake. Alva was born in the town of Canadice, Ontario County, New York. See Carrie for a list of their children.

Carrie A. Branch 1861 - 1902. Wife of Alva Branch (buried in Sand Lake) Mother of Thomas A. (born July 1891), Mae or May (born July 1887), Alice or Allee B. (born Oct 1896) , Carrie (born June 1899), and Ernest buried in Sand Lake (born Sept 1893).

Ernest R. Branch 1893 - 1904. Son of Alva and Carrie Branch, died in childhood.

Ida Margaret (Giem) Branch 1871 - 1957. Ida Margaret Giem, born December 17, 1871 in New Philadelphia, Tuscarawas County, Ohio, daughter of Albert Giem and Sara Ann Rigby, moved from Ohio to Portage MI with her parents.

Ida married Owen George Branch in 1892. Their children were: Lloyd A. (buried in Sand Lake), Irene Waive, Clair A. and Letha (buried in Sand Lake). Ida's parents, Albert and Sara Ann Giem, and her brother, Frank, are buried in Sand Lake. Shared tombstone with Owen George Branch.

Letha Branch 1910 - 1955 Letha was the daughter of Owen and Ida Branch and her siblings were Irene, Lloyd (unmarked grave in Sand Lake) and Clair. Letha was severely disabled from birth and spent most of her life in the Coldwater State Home. Letha has a tombstone in Sand Lake Cemetery, but she is buried in the Coldwater Cemetery - Critz Funeral Home Records in the Vicksburg Library verify my memory: "Branch Letha, of Coldwater,  died Dec 2, 1955, buried Coldwater, arrangements by Clair Branch" .

Lloyd A. Branch 1893 - 1966 NO TOMBSTONE unmarked grave near his parents Owen and Ida Branch.  Vickburg Commercial: "Mr. Lloyd A. Branch 5127 So. Long Lake Drive, age 72, passed away at Veterans Hospital Ann Arbor, Thursday morning, February 24, 1966, following a short illness. Mr. Branch was born July 31, 1893 in  Pavilion Township, the son of Owen and Ida (Giem) Branch and was a life long resident of the Kalamazoo area. Previous to his retirement, he was a self employed contractor and was a veteran of World War I. Mr. Branch is survived by his wife Lulu Coe... Private graveside services were held in Smith Cemetery Saturday morning at 11 under auspices of the American Legion. Funeral arrangements by Critz-Redmond Funeral Home.

Owen G. Branch 1869 - 1954 Owen George Branch, born June 14,1869 in Portage Township, Kalamazoo County, MI, was the son of Thomas Branch (buried in Sand Lake Cemetery) and Jane Burstow Branch. Later a stepson of Elery F. Briggs (buried in Sand Lake Cemetery, Owen and Ida owned and operated a farm between Austin and Long lakes and resided on 24th St. near R. Avenue. Owen and Ida also engaged in residential developments at Austin
and Long Lake as well sand and gravel extraction. Owen's brothers, Alfred and Alva, are buried in Sand Lake. See Ida M. Branch for a list of their children. Shared tombstone with Ida M. Branch.

Thomas Branch 1821 - 1877 Father Born May 6 1821; died Mar. 6 1877. Thomas was born in Kent, England and married Jane Burstow. In 1846 Thomas and Jane emigrated to the town of Canadice, Ontario County, New York where all their children except Owen were born. Sometime after 1855 Thomas and his family moved to Portage Township, Kalamazoo County, MI where they established a farm between Austin and Long lakes. Their children were: Alfred (buried in Sand Lake), Washington, Mary, Alva (buried in Sand Lake), Franklin, Alice, and Owen (buried in Sand Lake). In 1871 Thomas and Jane sold a right-of-way through their farm along the west side of Long Lake to the Grand Rapids and Indiana railroad which would connect Fort Wayne to Boyne Falls - see Albert Giem.

Elery Fuller Briggs 1811 - 1887 died Sept 20 1887 Aged 76 years 3 months 28 days - Elery (also sometimes spelled Ellery or Eleary) was born May 22, 1811 in Oneida County NY (or Livingston County). In 1884 he married the widow of Thomas Branch, Jane Burstow Branch. Obituaries: "The funeral was largely attended on Thursday at 11 a.m. Rev. D. H. Reiter (Congregational Church of Vicksburg), by request of deceased, officiating, and the remains were interred at the Smith burying ground."
"In 1839 he came to Michigan, and for nearly half a century his industries have been given to his adopted state. By faithful continued labor he acquired a fair competency of this world's goods (leaving an estate valued at $20,000 - 30,000). ""His wife and older brother, Zeb ,remain at the old home. Another of Kalamazoo County's pioneers has gone. Peace to his ashes."

GIEM:

Albert Giem Father 1833 - 1896 Albert emigrated from Saxony, Germany to New Philadelphia Ohio with his parents, John Christian and Dorothea, and his siblings, William, Karl (Charles) and Maria in 1837. Albert married Sara Ann Rigby (also buried in Sand Lake) on Sept. 9, 1855 in New Philadelphia. On April 15, 1889, Albert and Julia paid $600 for an 11 acre farm from A. C. Boone. The farm was located on the east shore of Austin Lake, Portage Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan - the farm is still owned by a Giem descendent. See Sara Ann Giem for a list of their children. Four of the sons became railroad engineers, Frank, William Charles, Edwin John (aka John Giem), and Archie Clyde. Three worked for the Grand Rapids and Indiana that ran through the Austin Lake farm.

Julia C. Giem 1864 - 1914 Wife of Frank Giem. Franklin and Julia Charlotte Moody Giem had the following children: Harry Lee Giem; b. in Richland, Mich., July 18, 1886; Max Frank Giem; b. in Kalamazoo, Mich., Apr. 9, 1890 - d. in Denver, Col., Jan. 6, 1897; Ross Nye Giem ; b. in Vicksburg, Mich., Sept. 1, 1894 ; d. Oct. 16, 1964; Seth Enoch Giem b. Aug. 8, 1902 ; d. Feb. 1990.

Sara Ann (Rigby) Giem Mother 1835 - 1908 Sara was born in Ireland according to my grandmother, Ida Giem Branch (it is likely the family had English origins since Rigby is an English name). She grew up in New Philadelphia, Ohio. She married Albert Giem in New Philadelphia.  Albert and Sara Ann had the following children: Alexander 7/23/1856 - 11/29/1860; Catherine 3/24/1859 - 11/2/1912, Franklin 12/21/61 - 1/20/1941 buried in Sand Lake;
Daniel Bates 1/5/1864 - 10/11/1941; Maria 12/3/1865 - 12/21/1888; Elizabeth Amanda /26/1868 - 2/5/1944 married ? Briggs; Cyrus 6/22/1870 - 10/2/1872; Ida Margaret 12/17/1871 - 9/13/1957 married Owen Branch, both buried in Sand Lake; William Charles 9/9/1873 - 12/23/1951 Boyne Falls MI; Albert Nelson born in MI 5/5/1876 - 11/23/1916; Edwin John born in MI 12/16/1878 - 2/28/1966 Los Angeles; and Archie ( Archibald) Clyde born in MI 11/3/1882 - 6/16/1960 Ft.
