Sheldon enlisted at Kalamazoo, Michigan, at the age of 40 [Michigan records state he enlisted at age 40; however, his decendents state that age was in error. He in fact lied about his age to enlist, as he was still a minor] for 1 year of service and took the muster oath on February 21, 1865. He served with the 6th Cavalry until the war and on August 16, 1865, when he was discharged from the service at Washington, D.C.
