From Plainfield, Charles enlisted as a Musician, May 13, 1861, at Grand Rapids, for 3 years at age 21. He was wounded in the right shin at the seige of Yorktown. Discharged at Detroit, on Jun 20, 1864. He is buried with his family in Star City, Michigan, which is now considered a "ghost town".
