John enlisted in Company G on August 20, 1861, at age 17. Took the muster oath on August 28, 1861, wounded and taken prisoner at Gaines' Mills, Virginia, on June 27, 1862. Paroled in September of 1862. He re-enlisted December 21, 1863, at Rappahanock Station, Virginia. Promoted to Corporal and then to Sergeant on April 1, 1865. Mustered out at Jeffersonville, Indiana, on July 8, 1865.
