From Ann Arbor, Michigan, he entered service with the 16th Infantry at its organization , as Major on August 22, 1861, at Detroit for three years at age 26. Commissioned on August 22, 1861. Mustered September 8, 1861. Commissioned Lieutenant Colonel July 6, 1862. Mustered July 6, 1862. Commissioned Colonel May 18, 1863. Mustered June 1, 1864. He was killed in action at Peeble's Farm, Va., a.k.a.Poplar Grove Church, Virginia on September 30, 1864.
