Entered service in Company F, 13th Michigan Infantry, at organization as 2nd Lieutenant, age 24. Commissioned October 3, 1861. Commissioned 1st Lieutenant November 14, 1862. Commissioned Captain of Company F on February 4, 1863. He was wounded in action on September 19, 1863, at the battle of Chickamauga. Transferred to the 1st Regiment, United States Veteran Volunteer Engineers, August 26, 1864. He served in that capacity until he was discharged at Nashville, Tn, on September 26, 1865.
