From Ottawa County, William enlisted in Company I, 3rd Infantry, May 15, 1861, at Grand Rapids, for 3 years service at age 29. He mustered in on June 10, 1861. He was discharged for disability at Edward's Ferry, Virginia, on March 25, 1863.
