From Bridgehampton, Stephen enlisted at Lexington, Michigan, for 3 years service at the age of 20 on August 13, 1862. He was captured by Confederate forces at the battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, on September 20, 1863. He was exchanged on May 11, 1865 and returned to the regimental service until he was mustered out at Mufreesboro, Tennessee, on June 26, 1865.
