From St. Clair County, Michigan, William enlisted at the age of 23 at St. Clair, Michigan, on December 24, 1861. He mustered in on the same day with the rank of 1st Sergeant. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on August 8, 1863, and then to Senior 1st Lieutenant on April 25, 1864. He was discharged at the end of his term of service at Nashville, Tennessee, on January 1, 1865.
