ALLEGAN TOWNSHIP. An early French trader named Beauchamp preceded settlers and located west of Allegan on the south side of the Kalamazoo River on what was known as Beauchamp Stretch, a stretch of nearly level water at the foot of what is now known as Beauchamp Hill. First purchases of land in this township were made from the government in 1833. Settlement of the Village of Allegan began in 1834. The township was surveyed and organized in 1836. The village of Allegan was incorporated in 1838; and as a city in 1907. |
