Matthews, Esther female, married, 67 years 7 months and 16 days of age, born in Pennsylvania, died of broken hip, parents unknown. *note from the researcher: Back in those times the knowledge of how to fix or treat a broken hip was unknown. When people broke a hip, of course they would be bed ridden, which would sometimes cause a blood clot, caused from the inactivity, along with the fact that blood clots sometimes occur with a traumatic injury such as a broken bone. A blood clot could form and break off into the artery and go to the heart or lungs and cause immediate death. Also, an injured person of that age would probably go into C.H.F. (congestive heart failure). The lungs, probably the feet, legs and most likely clear up into the torso would fill up with fluid (edema) because the heart became too weak to pump off the excess fluids throughout the body. Also with inactivity a person often developed pneumonia. I thought this might help you to understand why a person back in those times could die from a broken hip.
