Walkerville- Archie Kalman, 51 farmer residing a mile south of here, was found dead in his barn Tuesday night by his wife, Anna, upon her return from the village. Mr. Kalman, the son of Mrs. And Mrs. William Kalman, was a native of Walkerville. Besides the widow, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Fay Fairchild of South Leavitt; two brothers Fred and Guy of Muskegon and four grandchildren. Buried at Fairlawn Cemetery.

Baxter, George H. husband of Mary Schmiedeknecht (who died 14 years earlier) George H. Baxter after a brief illness on Monday at the age of 76 years near Shelby, 6 miles east of Shelby at his home. George was born in Blue Lake Township, March 8, 1865 and farmed near Ferry. He made his home the last 3 years with his 3 brothers Dan, Tom and Ben. Following his marriage to Miss Mary, of Claybanks, he farmed near Ferry and then spent several years in Muskegon. Mrs. Baxter died there 14 years ago. Cartwright, Merrick 63
GLADSTONE MAN IN FATAL CRASH Cartwright, Merrick 63 Killed in Car Midhap on M-35 at Beaver, Delta Co., Michigan.
Merrick Cartwright 63 of Gladstone was killed and his sosn Dick 37 was injured last evening at 5:30 when the car driven by the son skidded off Highway M-35 near Beaver north of Perkins while they were returning from a hunting camp. The elder Cartwright suffered a skull fracture and died almost instantly. The son was taken to St. Francis hospital in Escanaba for treatment. Physicians said he was suffering from shock and they believe his injuries are not serious. The Cartwrights were returning to Gladstone from a hunting camp where other members of the family were deer hunting. The car was traveling south on a straight stretch of road, when it skidded off the highway and rolled over end for end. The accident was investigated by state police of the Gladstone detachment and Coroner Keville Murphy of Escanaba. Cartwright is survived by his widow and 13 children. The fatality was the ninth highway death toll in Delta county so far this year. Five were in the City of Escanaba and four on roads in the county. The body was taken to the Kelley funeral home in Gladstone in preparation for burial.

Cartwright, Merrick…Funeral services for Merrick Cartwright 63 of Gladstone, who was killed in an auto accident near Beaver north of Perkins Saturday evening, are to be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Kelley funeral home, Rev. Sam Counterman of Escanaba officiating. Burial will be made in Fernwood cemetery. The deceased was born in lower Michigan and came to the Upper Peninsula and Gladstone about 25 years ago. Surviving are the father Merrick Cartwright of Gladstone; the widow, Katherine; fourteen children, Joseph of Milwaukee, Irving of Middleton, Conn., Clarence of Escanaba, Mrs. Ray Neal of Chicago, Elmer of Rock Falls, Conn., Mrs. F. Melind of Chicago, Richard of Meddleton, Conn., Robert and Everett of the U. S. Marines, Wallace of the U. S. Army whose present address is unknown, Mrs. Kenneth Minor of Escanaba, and Lawrence and Florence and Beverly at home. There are also five brothers, George of Shelby, Michigan, Jesse and Ralph of Gladstone, Harvey of Rock and Ray of Gladstone and one sister, Mrs. Minnie Hilton of Marinette and 15 grandchildren. Marine Everett left San Diego for home yesterday and he is expected to arrive in time for the services.

Knapp, Giles of Greenwood Township, Oceana County, Michigan, husband of Alice Hightower & Susie Sherwood. Giles was born in New York May 7, 1862. He came to Michigan as a small boy with his parents. Married July 3, 1887 to Alice Hightower who died March 2, 1909. On March 7, 1910 he married Susie Sherwood. Giles was a farmer and a Logger. He is survived by his wife Susie and six daughters: Ruth Knapp and Della Itineer of Hesperia, Mrs. Harry Camben, Mrs. Fred Howell, Mrs. Lida Shaffer all of Shelby, Mrs. Lansford of Otto & two sons: Herman of Muskegon & Warren & a brother Charles Knapp of Greenwood. *note, his parents were Nathan and Sarah Knapp of Greenwood.

Baxter, John N. husband of Nellie Pickle, died at the Shelby Hospital on Feb. 29 as the result of injuries received in an Auto accident which ocurred a mile and a half north west of Montague on Feb. 6. He was born on November 21, 1883 in Blue Lake Township and married Miss Nellie I. Pickle in Ferry in 1905. Mrs. Baxter preceded her husband in death 8 years ago. *(Nellie died July 14, 1936 in Crystal twp., Oceana County, Michigan, buried in Ferry Cemetery.) He is survived by 3 sons: Pvt. Raymond of Fort Seburt, Alabama, Sgt. John Clifford of Sulpher Spring, West Virg. Pearson Ole 73 of Golden Township, husband of Alma Thorson. Ole was born July 31, 1870 in Ystad, Sweden, came to the United States when he was 22 years old. He married Alma in Mears on September 5, 1896. He was a farmer for over ½ century and died at home in 1944. Surviving four sons: Yeoman, Edwin of U.S. Navy, Arthur of Grand Rapids and Ernest and Donald of Muskegon. Seven daughters: Ensign Alice Pearson R. Althouse, William 76 years old, husband of Laura (Starr) Butler, died unexpectedly @ his home here in Shelby. He was born in Weare Township, Oceana Co., Michigan on June 23, 1868, the son of Mr. And Mrs. John Althouse, pioneer residents of Oceana County. When he was 6 years old, they moved to Arkansas but returned 7 years later. He since had made his home in Oceana County at Mears and for 44 years in Shelby. William was married to Mrs. Laura (Starr) Butler of Elbridge January 16, 1908 and worked as a section hand on the Pere Marquette railroad and for the Harrison Basket Company here. He was a member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church of Shelby. Survived by 2 daughter: Mrs. Eliza Murphy of Shelby and Mrs. Mary Johnston of Detroit and 1 son, Floyd of Toledo and 4 step-children: Bert Butler of Muskegon, John Butler of Detroit, Mrs. Pearl Christiansen of Muskegon and 2 gr. Children, a sister Tillie Inman of Bald Knob, Ark., and 1 brother John Althouse of S. Bend, Indiana. Burrial @ Mount Hope Cemetery near Shelby.

Hesperia man dies of injuries in Oceana crash May 26.
Injuries sustained in an auto accident near Walkerville Monday evening proved fatal to Otis Spaulding 49 years old of Hesperia. Mr. Spaulding died at midnight last night in the Oceana Hospital here. He suffered a fractured skull and broken neck in the crash, which occurred a miles west of Walkerville on the main Hart-Walkerville County Highway. The Hesperia man was attempting to turn onto the highway from the Pebama Lake Rd. and crashed head on into a large tree. Sheriff Marland Littiebrant investigated the accident and coroner Hollis Tate of Hart stated no inquest would be held into the accident. Mr. Spaulding was an electrician and welder. He leaves his wife Marian, one son Jack, his mother Mrs. Jerusha Spaulding, a brother Cecil Spaulding, al of Hesperia.

Obit on Thursday, June 17, 1948 (died June 15) Set Funeral for Cartwright; Oceana Farmer Shelby, June 17, Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon for Thomas Cartwright, 84 years old, prominent Grant township farmer and former school and township official, who died Tuesday. The Rev. Jacob Bos, of Muskegon will officiate at the Rothbury Community church at 2 p.m. Saturday, with burial in Rothbury. The body lies in state at the Cooper Funeral home. Mr. Cartwright had lived for the past 79 years on the same farm in Grant Township, northeast of Rothbury. He had held various township offices and served as director of the Cartwright school, which was founded by his father, George Cartwright. Mr. Cartwright was born in Wisconsin on December 18, 1863 and was married in 1883 at Montague to Miss Elizabeth Wolfe. She died in 1930. He leaves three children, William of Muskegon Heights; Clarence of Rothbury and Mrs. Elma Tupper of Cudahy, Wisconsin; one brother Mac of Marinette, Wisconsin; 10 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.

Shannon, Wilbert J., Former Grocer, Long Ill, Dies. Wilbert J. Shannon, 55 years old, 1444 Hudson Street, formerly a grocery store owner here and recently employed by the Anaconda Wire and Cable Company, died yesterday in Hackley hospital after a long illness. He was the father of Patrolman Wilbert Shannon of the Muskegon police force. A former resident of Canada where he was born Feb. 9, 1893, in Ashburnham, Ontario, he came to America and Muskegon 32 years ago. A veteran of World War I, he served in the United States Army in Europe. After his discharge, May 12, 1919, he entered the grocery business here, joining the Sorenson Food market on Washington Avenue and Hudson Street. He retired from the grocery business in January this year and took employment at the local manufacturing firm. He was married Nov. 7, 1917, to Miss Ruth N. Sorenson in Muskegon. He was a member of the Central Lutheran church. He leaves his wife; two sons, Wilbert and Thomas G., both of Muskegon; one daughter, Miss Patricia of Muskegon, three brothers, Richard of Muskegon, and William and Edward, both of Ontario; and two grandchildren. Riddell, George Dies Tuesday

Popular Hart Township Man dies Tues. morning at the Oceana hospital after being admitted shortly after suffering a heart attack at his home. He was born July 23, 1872 in Hart and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Riddell, pioneer Oceana settlers, and has lived here all during his lifetime except from 1910 to 1913 when he resided in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1899 he married Otie Drake in Battle Creek. Mr. Riddell was a machinist by trade and operated his own shop in Hart for a number of years. During World War II he conducted a machine shop school, sponsored by the National Youth Administration, teaching students from 15-22 years of age. After his retirement in 1943 he spent his time farming. He was a veteran of the Spanish American War and a member of the William Salisbury Camp No. 52 of Scottville. Besides the widow, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Frances Ostrander of Portsmouth, Va., and Mrs. Ruth Ribe of Hart. Two sons, Clarence of Whitehall and Richard of Flagstaff, Arizona. There is one brother, Charles, of Hart and six grand children. Burial will be in the Hart Cemetery.

Areklet, Bertel J Resident in West Golden Township Past Sixty Years. Bertel J Areklet, 87, Golden township resident for the past sixty years, died Saturday night, Dec. 2, 1950, at the Oceana Hospital after a months’ illness. Mr. Areklet was born April 18, 1863 in Navistdal, Norway. He came to the United States, with his brother Mathias, at the age 21 in 1886. He cleared a farm in Golden Township near Juniper Beach. He and his wife resided on the farm until their deaths. Mr. Areklet was a member of the Lutheran Church. On April 16, 1894, he was married to Lena Andrews at Muskegon. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1944. Mrs. Areklet preceded her husband in death on May 07, 1950. (At the time this notice was printed.) Mr. Areklet is survived by three sons, Carl of Golden Township, Frank of Pentwater, and John of Muskegon. One daughter, Mrs. Jennie Ervin of Hart, and one grandchild. Mr. Areklet was one of the county’s sturdy pioneers and he cleared a homestead for his family when much of the county was still a wilderness. Highly respected by all, his passing is sincerely mourned by a large circle of friends.

Death Takes Mrs. Puffer At Montague Montague, Jan. 19--- Mrs. Edna Puffer, 55, resident here for the past eight years, died Wednesday night at her home. She was born in Ferry Township May 2, 1900, and was married to Irving Puffer June 27, 1917, at Hart. Mrs. Puffer was a member of the Whitehall Congregational Church. Besides her husband she leaves four sons, Nila of Ferry, Jerald and Elgie of Muskegon, and Harold of Montague; five daughters, Mrs. Robert Picard of Muskegon, Mrs. Mitchell Jackson, Mrs. John Crawford, Mrs. Don Beckwith all of Montague, and Miss Betty Puffer of Coldwater. 22 grandchildren: a brother, Guy Webster of Elbridge, and two sisters, Mrs. Jessie Kidner of Grant and Mrs. Frank Eitenier of Hesperia. Webber, William Funeral services for William Webber, 90, lifelong Claybanks resident will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Gee Chapel with Rev. Albert Krug officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Mr. Webber died Monday at his winter home in Muskegon after a short illness. He was born on the Claybanks farm where he had resided for so many years July 6, 1865. He was married to Louise Omness, also of Claybanks, July 13, 1898. They celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary last July. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Carl and Ernest; three daughters, Mrs. Alma Lozon, Mrs. Mabel Berghuff, Mrs. Mildred Server, all of Muskegon, nine grandchildren, 8 great- grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Julia Barber of N. Funeral services were held Monday at the Weaver Funeral home for Mrs. Otie Riddell, 77, of Hart, who passed away last Thursday at Portsmouth, Va., where she had been visiting a daughter, Mrs. Frances Ostrander. Buried in Hart cemetery. Mrs. Riddell was born in 1881 at Marshall. She was married to George Riddell in 1899 at Battle Creek and they lived in Wisconsin until coming to Hart in 1913 to make their home. Surviving are two daughters Mrs. Ostrander and Mrs. Ruth Ribe of Nashville, Tenn.; two sons, Clarence of Whitehall and Richard of Warren, Arizona; 8 gr. Children, and three grt grand children. Mr. Riddell passed away in 1949.

Smith, Clare L. born December 12, 1896, died April 1962, husband of Lillie Gregoryre & Gertrude Sprunger. He was active for many years in sawmills here and at Hesperia, died at him home in Ferry, Monday following a short illness. He was 65. Mr. Smith was born in Ferry December 12, 1896. He followed his father, Herbert T. Smith in the crate works, the later had founded. In 1933 he bought his father’s interest and became sole owner. He purchased the Hesperia mill in 1957. Mr. Smith turned operation of the enterprises over to his four sons in 1959. Mr. Smith was active in the Ferry Methodist Church and in the Oceana Conservation League. He had served on the Oceana County draft board for the past 15 years. He was married in March 1915 to Lillie Gregoire. She died in May 1921. Mr. Smith then married Gertrude Sprunger in Bern, Indiand July 5, 1924. He is survived by his widow, four sons, Lamont of Hesperia, Lawrence of Hart, Bradley & Roger of Ferry, three daughters Mrs. Donna Simms of Pentwater, Mrs. Verl Sanderson of Kalamazoo and Mrs. Mary Glover of Ionia, a brother Mark of Plainwell, 2 sisters Mrs. Grace Mason & Mrs. Ruth Hinds of Ferry and 17 grand children. Irving Puffer Montague Irving C. Puffer, 68 of Hart Township, Oceana County, a former long time resident of Montague, died unexpectedly Wednesday at the Gebhart Farm, where he had worked seven years. He also resided at the farm. The cause of death was not determined as of this morning. Mr. Puffer was born at Crystal Valley, Sept. 17, 1896 and married Edna Mae Webster June 27,1917 in Hart. she died Jan. 18, 1956 Mr. Puffer lived in Montague Township for 18 yrs, and formerly worked in foundries in Muskegon. Surviving are four sons, Niley of Ferry, Gerald and Elgie, both of Montague, and Harold of Twin Lake: five daughter’s. Mrs. Geraldine Jackson and Mrs. Shirley Beckwith, both of rural Whitehall, Mrs. John Lavere of Crawford, Mrs. Bertha Picard of Muskegon, and Miss Betty of Coldwater: four sisters, Mrs. Kitty Makin of Muskegon, Mrs. Angie Fouts and Mrs. Mary Dillingham of Hart, and Mrs. Mina Zimmerman of Grand Rapids; 33 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at White Lake Baptist Church, here. Burial will be at Rothbury Cemetery. The body is at Gee Funeral Home.

Mrs. Margaret Tozer of Whitehall– Mrs. Margaret Tozer, 77 of Grand Rapids, died Wednesday in Shelby Hospital. She was visiting her daughter, Mrs. Charles Moelhman in Whitehall when she became ill. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Gee Funeral Home, Whitehall, with burial in Hesperia East Cemetery. She was born Dec 29, 1888 in White Cloud and received her education there. The former Margaret MCGowan was married to Loran Tozer in 1903. He died in 1951. Mrs. Tozer was a retired practical nurse. Besides her daughter, she leaves three sisters, Mrs. Gladys Driscoll, Detroit, Mrs. Flossie Stout, Muskegon and Mrs. Elizabeth Dellaven, White Cloud; two brothers, Patrick McGowan, Fremont and Edward, White Cloud; 17 grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren.

Mr. DePeel was born in Oceana County, Michigan to Charles Benjamin and Lucinda (Moist) DePeel. On August 6, 1905, he married Rosa McPherson of Kalkaska, Michigan, who preceded him in death in 1934. Mr. DePeel was a retired farmer. Surviving are two sons: Ben DePeel of Mancelona and Archie DePeel of Niles, Michigan; four daughters: Cora Misner of Battle Creek, Michigan; Addie Long and Lila James of Kalamazoo, Michigan; and Clara Vender of Loma Linda, California. He was preceded in death by one brother, two sisters, and one daughter.

Surviving are two brothers Clinton of Twin Lake Lake and George of Muskegon, two sisters Hazel Wirt of Muskegon and Ruth Wirt of Ravenna. The funeral service for Mr. Kenneth P. Wirt will be held Saturday morning at 11 o’clock at the Lee Funeral Home, Rev. Robert Savage, officiating. Mr. Wirt will be laid to rest in Fruitland Cemetery, Dalton, Mi.
