WORK UNDERWAY AT COUNTY FARM

Work on a new addition to the Allegan county infirmary is well underway and Ted Hicks, director of the social welfare department, said, it might be ready for use within three weeks.

The addition, connecting the original "home" with the hospital, will include a kitchen, utility room and quarters for members of the staff. As soon as the building is ready, staff members will move to their new rooms, leaving vacant space in the old building.

Hicks said this space, possible 20 beds, will be quickly filled. At the present time there is a large "waiting list" of patients and the county is housing several in private nursing homes.

Construction, under the direction of Frank Carlson, is being handled on a "cost-plus" basis.

Hicks said equipment for the addition is already a problem. Cost of some kitchen gear has almost doubled since the department first planned on the addition. He said it might be necessary to improvise for some time until the money is available.
